Pat's Educational Philosophy

"I believe that all children can learn and it is the job of the Bellevue schools to do whatever is necessary to help each child become all they can become.  I also believe that the child, parents, teachers, and administrators must work together for the success of the student."

What a School Board Does or Should Do

A school board (by law) must follow federal and state laws and guidelines.  This is (at times) limiting, but within these parameters the school board oversees the hiring of the superintendent, other administrators, teachers, and all support people.  The board must agree with the curriculum which is carefully selected by the teachers, parents, and administrators of the district.  The board negotiates with teacher representatives to set each year's salaries for administrators, teachers, and support people.  District purchases must also be passed by the school board..

The daily running of the district is left in the hands of the superintendent, but at times the board is asked to be a jury when a student, teacher, or administrator request a hearing about various things.  In these cases, the board must come into the hearing with an impartial ear.

Condition of the District

  • Academics are excellent: Bellevue has a 96% daily attendance rate; 98 % graduation rate; significant number of the states perfect SAT/ACT scores; national awards in academic competition; the only metro district without any No-Child-Left-Behind discrepancies; the only metro district with all schools fully accredited
  • Bellevue is the only metro district out of debt; has the lowest tax levy for 12 years; has the lowest administrative cost per student; has no temporary classrooms; three new schools opened without bonds or new taxes; excellent extra-curricular programs produce champions and award winners; the only metro district with no student admission fees for events.
